The Slick transitions package has been in there since the start, it allows visual effects as you transition between states in your game. There has never been much in there, Slick has always assumed the people would use it, build their own and submit them back. Seems it was a bit too open ended - meaning too complicated. So, Slick updated the package to have a few more features and set of example transitions for "cooler" effects.
